About The George Todd & Mary Tyrie (Ogilvie) Family
Todd is a 'split name' and is either a sept of the Gordon or MacTavish clans. The way a person with the name TODD would know which Clan they were from is know where the start of their family stems from. Our family came from Forfar in the county of Angus so we are more likely to be associated with the Gordon clan.
George Todd was born in Carmyllie, Scotland July 9,1820 (1901 census of Canada) into a family of five. George married Mary Tyrie in 1838 and had four children - David, Alexander, Mary and William. In 1853 the family came to Canada and settled in Luther TOwnship where George was named first Reeve.
As part of the Donaldson Settlement Scheme, in approximately 1873, George and Mary along with their sons William and Alexander packed up their families and headed to Concession 4 Royston,in Ryerson Township. The journey they took would have been quite tedious. They travelled by horse and buggy up to Lake Rouseeau where they boarded a ferry of sorts to cross the lake. They then travelled the Rosseau/Nipissing Road to the Magnetewan River where they again went by water to eventually end up in Ryerson Township.
George was a shoemaker and farmer by trade. In 1880, he was elected the first Reeve of Ryerson Township, a post he held until 1883. In 1884, he moved his shoe shop to Burks' Falls. Late in life he returned to Grand Valley and spent his last years living with his son, Alex. He is buried in the little pioneer cemetery at South Luther that he helped organize 41 years earlier.
George & Mary's son, William was a builder and carpenter. In 1870 at the tender age of 17, he served with the Brampton Infantry Company, 36th Peel Battalion in the Fenian Raids.
March 15,1871 he married Charlotte Nelson in Luther Township. When he settled in Ryerson Township, he was appointed to the position of Constable in 1880 and earned the princely sum of $2.00 per year. William & Charlotte had seven (7 children). Wm built 3 schools in the area - Doe Lake (1891) Wiseman (1893) and Midlothian (1898).
WIlliam and Charlotte's son John (1877-1949) married Ethel Levada Gregory of Haliburton. They settled on the Nelson homestead (John's grandparents) and raised 10 children. John and Ethel's eldest son, William Henry was my father.
